RANDOLPH, NJ - In May of 2013, neighborhood park’s play structures at Kiwanis Park in the Mt. Fern section of Randolph were torn down. The park was no longer up to code for safety according to the township. Residents in the area then banded together to see what could be done to get their park back.
Kimberly Trella, a neighborhood resident and mother, immediately began organizing neighbors whose children have spent time in this park, and also reached out to the Kiwanis Club, for whom the park was named after years ago.
Residents were delighted to learn that the Kiwanis Club felt just as strongly about the park being rebuilt. With township support through The Parks and Recreation Department in addition to the support of Kiwanis, everyone is hoping to have the new play structures in by May of 2014.
Isabella Cleffi, a 9-year-old who lives in the neighborhood, said, "I'm so excited to be helping raise money for the park in my neighborhood. I am super psyched to be able to play there next summer."
The total cost of equipment is estimated to be $38,000. Randolph Township is covering $25,000 of the cost and $1,000 was raised by neighborhood families earlier this year. This leaves a balance of $12,000.
To help raise the remaining funds, the Kiwanis Club has generously offered to match all donations raised by the neighborhood dollar for dollar, up to $5,000.
In addition, the Club will be working with K-Kids Clubs as well as the RHS Key Club to raise funds for the playground. Preliminarily, Fernbrook K-Kids is hoping to have a fundraising event in March 2014.
To help earn the dollar for dollar match amount, are residents are hoping for donations. According to Trella “Not only does an updated neighborhood park provide us with a safe place for our children, or our children’s children to play, it increases our property values as well. Trella also stated “I'm just glad we're getting support from the township and the dollar for dollar match from the Kiwanis Club is amazing."
