NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Time is running out to attend the Our Lady of Peace Church Annual Country Fair, which concludes today, Saturday, May 10.  The Fair, which began on Wednesday, is one of the signature events held in New Providence each year and draws thousands of attendees from all over New Jersey.

Attendees are able to participate in fair games, such as a “shoot out the star” booth and a balloon-dart toss. Over 15 rides – including a Himalaya, a Tilt-a-Whirl, and, of course, a Ferris Wheel – provide fun for fair goers of all ages.

Fairgoers also can enjoy funnel cakes, zeppoles, fried Oreos, hamburgers, hotdogs, cotton candy, and many other treats.

Inside the church gym, merchants are running booths. Mom’s Kitchen is selling food and drinks. Event organizers are also offering raffle baskets donated by local businesses, including an iPad, a flatscreen TV, a grill, and more.

Event organizers are offering an hourly 50-50 and a giant 50-50 of more than $5000.

Local businesses helped finance the fair. All proceeds go to the church, which divides them between the Academy of OLP and various programs and maintenance projects. “We’ve raised 1.5 million in the past 25 years,” said Leon Drone, finance chair of the event.

The fair attracts between eight and ten thousand attendees every year, according to Jimmy Johnston, who, along with his wife Debbie, have served as the event’s main organizer for 25 years. Johnston emphasized the huge volunteer effort on which the fair depends.

“The fair is all about the community,” said Father Bill Mahon, “That’s why we do it. That’s why we have so many volunteers who step forward to do it.”
