Our Generation Must Prepare for the Real World

Our generation is full of aspiring young men and women from different cultures, with unique beliefs, opinions, and dreams. It is a generation raised in prosperity, but facing their future in a country struggling with difficult economic and social issues. Since the Second World War America has enjoyed a prosperous economy, boosting citizens’ sense of nationalism, security, and optimism. However, in recent years that stability has diminished, replaced with an economy that presents obstacles to the dreams of young minds.

Unemployment has become an issue, fed by the increasing transfer of jobs to other countries. Andrew Sum, labor market director at North Eastern University, says, “We are doing a great disservice by not admitting how bad it is for young people to get a job.”  Many Americans have been hit with the realization that their children, no matter from what background, will be hurled into fierce competition for employment, security, and success.

Young people need to take seriously the necessity of understanding the complexities and responsibilities of the adult world. In addition to focusing on academic achievement, our generation needs to be educated on smart and efficient living (i.e. time and money management), and learn how to decisively pursue and succeed at a career. It is these skills that will be essential in a competitive economy and a more difficult future. If we are not prepared, what does the future hold for our generation?
