OT Goal Lifts Summit Boys Varsity Soccer Over Scotch Plains-Fanwood

SUMMIT, NJ - No one could quite remember when, but most said it had been a long time. Too long, in fact, since the Summit High School boys varsity soccer team had beaten Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

That streak has now ended.

Thanks to a disciplined team effort, some stellar goalkeeping, and a goal from striker Eric Reyes, Summit left Scotch Plains with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over the Raiders.

The teams played an even first half, with both sides getting decent chances, but neither could break through. The second half saw the Raiders control the majority of play, but senior goalkeeper Nick Zachara made several key saves to keep the game level. As the end of regulation drew near, Summit's James Holzer’s saw his chip over the 'Keeper hit the post, bounce out, and the match was headed to overtime.

In OT, Holzer dispossessed a Raiders player of the ball and immediately counter-attacked, lofting a diagonal pass in the direction of Reyes.  Reyes collected the ball, drew the goalkeeper out, slotted home, and the match -- along with that streak -- was over.

"The team played quality defense against an extremely talented squad, and took the match by playing a productive, counter-attacking style which won the match 3-4 minutes into the first overtime," said Summit head coach Chris Yager. "To their credit, the boys played textbook."

Next up for Summit, at Gov. Livingston October 29 (kickoff 7 p.m.), followed by a Halloween afternoon match at home versus A.L. Johnson starting at 4 p.m.
