WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Orange/West Orange chapter of UNICO (Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity), the largest Italian-American service organization in the country, will hold its 40th Annual Sports Awards Breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 23 in the Tarnoff Cafeteria at West Orange High School, 51 Conforti Avenue.

The event begins at 10:00 a.m., where guests will be served breakfast by local UNICO members. The breakfast recognizes student athletes and community members who "display outstanding commitments to their respective teams and/or groups." The honorees are 'unsung heroes' on their sports teams and within the community. Outstanding male and female student athletes from four high schools including West Orange High School, Orange High School, Seton Hall Preparatory School and Golda Och Academy are recognized.

This year's keynote speaker is Sportswriter and Broadcaster Ed Lucas (http://www.edlucas.org/), who has covered the New York sports scene since 1964. His encouraging and affirming attitude on overcoming life's disappointments come from his own experience. Lucas was an aspiring baseball player who was hit in the face with a ball in high school and has been blind for 55 years.

Since its inception, the event has raised more than $300,000. UNICO supports student scholarships and local organizations (not just for the Italian-American community).

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door.
