WEST ORANGE, NJ -  HANDS, Inc., ValleyArts, and University of Orange invite you to become involved with the new "Valley We Design" project, a community-driven, collaborative effort to envision and design improvements to sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, outdoor arts spaces, bikeways, and connections in and to the Valley Arts District.  The 90-day "Valley We Design" project is facilitated by noted landscape architect and urban designer Tim Delorm and funded by Together North Jersey, the nine-county transit coalition.

The project kicks off with the "Walk Around & Picnic Workshop" onSaturday, September 7, 9:00am to 1:00pm.  After assembling at Ironworks Community Artist Center, 406 Tompkins Street in Orange, participants will break into teams to walk the Valley to photograph and identify opportunities to enhance existing open spaces and design new open spaces to enhance community life. A free picnic lunch will be served back at Ironworks during which each team will have an opportunity to share their discoveries and design recommendations for the Valley.

The second chapter in the process is the "Valley Vision & Design Workshop," Tuesday, September 24, 6pm to 8pm, also at the Ironworks Community Artist Center, 406 Tompkins Street.

During this workshop participants will determine a shared vision and begin the designs for the Valley's public spaces. With markers and paper in hand, this Workshop will be a highly interactive event where you and your neighbors will have fun discussing and drawing your ideas for the Valley's gateways, streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, bikeways, and transit facilities.

Said HANDS Executive Director Patrick Morrissy, "We look forward to learning everything we can about the community's wants, needs, and ideas for the next step in the evolution of the Valley."

Tim Delorm shares "the goals of the Valley project are to improve existing and design new public spaces that will strengthen connections to the City, improve transit access, magnify the Valley's identity, and enhance the quality of life in the Valley Arts District." Mr. Delorm will interpret input from residents and professionals alike into conceptual designs during the next 90 days.

HANDS will announce additional workshops as the project progresses with the development of prioritized implementation plans and funding strategies being completed by late November.
