WEST ORANGE, NJ - Operation Take-Back returns to West Orange on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the West Orange Police Headquarters, 60 Main St.

Mayor Robert Parisi made the announcement, noting, “Each year we participate in the Operation Take-Back campaign to provide a safe way for residents to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The township is committed to doing everything we can to make our communities safer, and this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.”

West Orange will partner with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to allow the community to drop off their unused, expired and unwanted prescription drugs for safe disposal and destruction.

Prescription and over the counter medicines are a leading cause of accidental poisoning in homes.  Flushed and trashed medicines can contaminate soil and waterways.  If those drugs are intercepted during disposal, they can contribute to prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high.

The most susceptible demographic are teenagers, with over 50% of teen prescription drug abuse taking medications from their own family and friends' medicine cabinets.

Other initiative supporters include the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy; the Partnership for a Drug-Free America; the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the National Association of Attorneys General; the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy; the Federation of State Medical Boards; and the National District Attorneys Association.
