Off-Duty West Orange Police Officer Discharges Weapon in Newark Incident

NEWARK, NJ - Authorities are investigating an incident in which an off-duty West Orange police officer discharged his weapon in Newark.
According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, the officer, who has not been identified, was with his father, a Newark police officer.
The preliminary investigation indicates the two officers observed individuals attempting to break into cars in the vicinity of North 13th Street in Newark, and took police action. One of the cars drove toward the off-duty West Orange officer, striking him. At that point he discharged his weapon. He was transported to University Hospital and the two suspects have been taken into custody.
The incident is being investigated by the Newark Police Department and the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.
