Oasis to Take Part in 'Giving Tuesday'

Monday, December 2, 2013 • 12:19pm

PATERSON, NJ - Oasis-A Haven for Women and Children has joined the #GivingTuesday
movement, a nationwide effort to harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners—
charities, families, businesses and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about
and participate in the giving season.

Taking place Tuesday, Dec. 3, #GivingTuesday uses social media to create a national moment
around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have
become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

“#GivingTuesday is acounter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” said Kathy
Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. “The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved
ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”

Oasis, located on Mill Street in Paterson, is encouraging two types of participation around
#GivingTuesday. First, supporters can donate directly to Oasis at www.oasisnj.org. In
particular, Oasis is highlighting the “Lunches with Love” program, which allows donors to
sponsor an entire afternoon’s worth of meals in the Oasis soup kitchen for a donation of $139.
“During this holiday season, when the average American spends close to $800 on holiday
presents with many spending a lot more, we would love for people to consider feeding 250
people for just $139,” said Sister Gloria Perez, Executive Director of Oasis.  “Our daily hot meal provides both sustenance and hope to the women and children of Paterson – hope that someone in their very own community cares about their well‐being and will be by their side as they
struggle to improve their lives.”

Secondly, Oasis is partnering with local restaurants that have graciously volunteered to donate
a percentage of the proceeds from that day to Oasis. Lead participant, Valley Stables Food and
Drink in Oakland, is donating all of the proceeds from Dec. 3 to Oasis. “We have
long supported the work of Oasis in helping women in Paterson break the cycle of poverty, so
supporting Oasis at our restaurant on #GivingTuesday is a natural fit,” noted owners Joe and
Melissa Kelly. “We hope that those dining with us not only feel good about making a difference
with their meal purchase, but that they consider learning more about Oasis and supporting this
work in the future.”

“We are so thankful for Joe and Melissa and their whole team at Valley Stables,” said Kathleen
Long, Oasis Director of Development. “The fact that they are donating 100 percent of the proceeds
demonstrates not only their tremendous generosity but their long‐standing commitment to
making a difference in their own community. It’s wonderful to have such friends.”
