NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -- The North Plainfield School District has reportedly hired West Milford Superintendent James McLaughlin, Ed.D. as it's new superintendent after a six-month search.

McLaughlin, who reportedly will not start until January 2015, has been with the West Milford School District for only two years, and previously served as an assistant superintendent in Cranford.  He is also an adjunct professor of Special Education at both Kean University and St. Peter's University.

The new administrator received his B.A. in Elementary and Special Education from St. John's University in 1984, and his education doctorate from Seton Hall University in 1998.  In between he received a Master's degree in learning disabilities from Kean University.

McLaughlin is also the president of the New Jersey Council of Administrators of Special Education (NJ CASE).

The North Plainfield district has gone through a significant overhaul in its administration in the past nine months.  In February both Superintendent Marilyn Birnbaum and East End Principal Kathleen Hermann announced plans to retire, Birnbaum in June and Hermann in March.

Hermann was replaced with Principal Brian Farrell in early April, but Farrell left the district in June after receiving another job offer in a district closer to home.  Farrell was subsequently replaced by the extremely popular vice principal of North Plainfield's Middle School, John Ferguson.

Ferguson was replaced at the Middle School with former High School administrator Edison Torres, who also graduated from North Plainfield's school system.

There are also reports that Dr. Robert Rich, the district Assistant Superintendent, has announced his retirement though there has been no formal announcement.

We have a call in to the district and are requesting an interview with Dr. McLaughlin.
