NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – As part of a continued effort to provide a healthy environment, the Borough Council voted last Monday to ban all smoking on Borough property.  This includes everything from office buildings, public works and recreation facilities, parks and other areas.

“The state of New Jersey recently passed a law authorizing towns to take this step,” said Borough Administrator David Hollod.  “This is the best thing for our residents and employees’ health.”

Rights of way such as sidewalks are not included in the ban, except when they are part of Borough property.

In June when the ordinance was first proposed Council President Douglas Singleterry was very much in favor.  Original discussion was limited to certain Borough properties, but after requests from Councilwoman Mary Forbes and Councilman Skip Stabile to include the Vermuele Mansion and Fleetwood Camera Museum all property was included.

Councilman Larry LaRonde noted that many events on public property last hours, and asked that designated smoking areas be included at certain parks.  The vote against the inclusion of smoking areas was 5-1, and the bill proceeded.

The ordinance passed will include a smoking area at Borough Hall, most likely in the back of the building to avoid residents being forced to walk through second hand smoke.  It will take effect in early September.
