WEST ORANGE, NJ - Nolvin Garcia, 25, a.k.a. Jose Elvin Lendos Garcia, of Orange, was sentenced today to 24 years in prison for the murder of Jacques Nelson at Misty's Bar and Restaurant in West Orange on Aug. 6, 2012.
The news was announced by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray. The Honorable Peter J. Vazquez, J.S.C., sentenced Garcia to 24 years in New Jersey state prison for first-degree aggravated manslaughter and first-degree attempted murder in the fatal shooting of Nelson, 32, also of Orange.
Nelson worked as a bouncer at Misty's Bar and Restaurant. A father of four, he was shot and killed outside Misty's on Main Street in West Orange while attempting to break up an argument between Garcia and another patron in the parking lot.
Garcia pleaded guilty on July 23, 2013. As acitizen of Honduras, Garcia will face deportation after he completes his prison sentence. Under the No Early Release Act, he must serve 85 percent of the 24-year before becoming eligible for parole. He will then have to serve 5 years probation when he is released.
“This is a tragedy for the entire Nelson family. Here was a man working two jobs to provide for his family. He stepped in to be a peacemaker during a fight and was senselessly killed by a man with an illegal gun,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Eileen O’Connor. “Hopefully, the outcome will bring the family a measure of solace.’’
