WESTFIELD, NJ — Time is running out for Westfield residents to file to run for the board of education. Three seats could be vacated as Ann Cary’s, Rosanne Kurstedt’s and Mark Friedman’s terms expire, and so far no one has stepped up to fill them, according to the Union County Clerk’s office. (Cary and Kurstedt have publicly announced that they will not seek another term.)

The deadline for submission of nominating petitions is July 28.

In the event that there are not enough eligible candidates for the board seats, the vacancies “shall be filled by the County Superintendent,” according to N.J.S.A. 18A:12-15, a New Jersey statute.

“Serving on the Westfield Board of Education is a significant and rewarding civic commitment,” said Board President Rich Mattessich. “We have the opportunity to impact the policies of our school district toward continued success of the students of our community.”

“I serve because if you want to affect change you first have to show up,” added board member Mitch Slater. “I know there are at least three folks in town that want to make a difference and will stand up now. I am more than happy to talk to anyone interested.”

Westfield residents interested in running for a three-year term on the board of education must file a petition in-person at the County Clerk’s office at 2 Broad St., Room 113, in Elizabeth on or before 4 p.m. on July 28.  The election will take place on Nov. 4, 2014. Nominating petition forms are available at the Board of Education office, 302 Elm Street, Westfield.

Questions regarding the election process can be referred to the Union County Election Supervisor, Lisa Hugelmeyer, at 908-527-4996. Information is available at the County Clerk’s website, www.ucnj.org/ctyclerk. Interested residents are encouraged to contact any member of the Westfield Board of Education or Superintendent of Schools Dr. Margaret Dolan for more information.
