LIVINGSTON, NJ - Livingston-based New Jersey Ballet is among 35 non-profits statewide to share in more than $690,000 in grants from the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey. The $10,000 grant received for general operations and educational activities is slated to fund upcoming events for 2014 and the celebration of New Jersey’s 350th anniversary.
On Feb. 23, 2014, in collaboration the New Jersey Youth Symphony at the Mayo PAC in Morristown, the company will present “NJ Ballet honors NJ Composers,” and a second program called “Jazz, Jazz, Jazz,” will receive its premiere at MPAC on March 15, 2014. The ballet company will commission four new ballets for the project.
Following in the spring, the ballet will honor Jerome Kern and jazz legends Count Basie, Wayne Shorter and Christian McBride, New Jersey composers whose music has become part of American culture. The programs will feature collaborations with two of the state’s outstanding young musicians’ organizations: the New Jersey Youth Symphony and Jazz House Kids (also a Horizon grant recipient).
Highlights of both programs will headline the company’s own 55th anniversary celebration at NJPAC on April 5, 2014. Details and tickets for all three performances will be made available shortly.
New Jersey Ballet’s extensive performance schedule is made possible in part by support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and by other generous corporate, foundation, and individual contributors. The company has been designated a Major Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for “artistic excellence, substantial programming, and broad public service,” and has twice been voted New Jersey’s Favorite Dance Company. All locations where New Jersey Ballet performs are fully accessible. Large type programs are available at every performance. Recorded program notes can be made available upon request up to two weeks prior to performance.
