New Providence Resident Avoids Being Taken by 'Grandson Scam'

1-28-2012 – While on patrol Corporal Steven Opalewski reported graffiti damage to a rear wall of the Adams Shopping Center.
1-28-2012 – Corporal Steven Opalewski located two juvenile males acting in a suspicious manner and trespassing at a business on Central Avenue. Upon further investigation, one of the males had discarded a backpack containing alcohol beverages along side a parked motor vehicle. The juveniles were turned over to their parents.
1-30-2012 – Patrols took a report at headquarters in regards to a rental vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Ram, which was stolen out of a driveway on Hickson Drive. The suspect has been identified and charges are pending.
2-1-2012 – Patrols took a report from a resident of Colonial Way in regards to a scam known as the “Grandson Scam.” The resident was contacted by someone posing as her 16-year-old grandson. The person claiming to be her grandson stated that he was in prison in Peru and needed bail money to get out. Then someone posing as a police officer got on the phone and spoke with her and advised her that she needed to send $2,700 via Western Union to an address in Peru. The resident contacted his daughter who advised him their grandson was not in Peru and was not in jail.
2-3-2012 – Patrolman Andrew Diamond charged Dominic Nedig, of Highspire, Pennsylvania and Andrew Cummings Jr. of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania with receiving stolen property. The charges stem from Patrolman Diamond observing the vehicle driven by Mr. Nedig displaying a license plate from a different vehicle that had been reported stolen from a victim in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. Mr. Nedig was also issued equipment violations for his vehicle. Both individuals were released with a pending court date.
2-4-2012 – A Marion Avenue resident reported that her vehicle had been broken into overnight. She stated that missing from the vehicle was credit cards and cash.
2-5-2012 – Corporal Steven Opalewski reported graffiti damage to a business on Central Avenue.
2-5-2012 – A Columbus Avenue resident reported that his vehicle had been broken into overnight. Items in the vehicle were moved but nothing was reported missing at the time of the report.
