New Providence Residence Damaged in Weekend Kitchen Fire

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Emergency crews responded to a kitchen fire in New Providence on Saturday that officials are saying was not suspicious.
Shortly before 7 p.m., firefighters, police and EMS responded to a report of fire and black smoke coming from a residence on Fifth Street. Crews from the New Providence Fire Department, assisted by Berkeley Heights and Chatham Township, had the fire contained within an hour. An investigation by the Union County Arson Team determined that the fire started in the kitchen. The preliminary investigation did not reveal anything of a suspicious nature.
One police officer was treated for minor smoke inhalation but did not require any further medical attention.
