NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence Reds started the season off with a 16-0 opening day victory over the Bergen Jackals on Sunday, April 13.
The Reds -- who won the inaugural New Jersey Amateur Baseball League Metal Championship in 2013 by defeating the Jersey Twins on a walk-off grand slam by catcher Pat Rooney -- picked up where they left off last season with their offense coming through from start to finish.
The Reds opened things up by scoring nine runs in the first inning. They would go on to add three in the third and four in the fourth inning.
Third baseman Tom Pavero of New Providence led the way for the Reds at the plate by going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a walk including a two run triple in the fourth inning. First baseman Billy Holden also had a big game as he finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 RBI and a triple.
Shortstop Nick Sommo of New Providence added two RBI for the Reds.
On the mound, the Reds were paced by starter and newcomer Cody Cummings, a 2013 Drew University graduate who pitched a complete game, going five innings while striking out six batters and scattering just four hits.
The Reds next home game will be Sunday April 27, as they host the West Milford Indians in a doubleheader at New Providence High School beginning at noon.
The Reds are managed by Matt Sommo and Sal Nesto both of New Providence.
