NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Memorial Day Parade honoring those who have served the United States in its armed forces will be held on Monday, May 26. The forecast is for sunny weather and temperatures in the 70s, but the parade will proceed, rain or shine.

American Legion Post 433, in cooperation with the Borough of New Providence, has sponsored the town’s annual Memorial Day parade for more than 65 years.

The parade will marshal on Central Avenue off Springfield Avenue starting at 9:30 a.m.  The parade itself begins at 10 a.m. Mayor Brooke Hern will begin the community services on the front lawn of the Presbyterian Church. The parade will pause at the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church for Memorial Services in honor of our deceased veterans including an honor guard salute and taps played at each location.

Col. Ed Chrystal will be the keynote speaker for the borough’s community service beginning at 10 a.m. on the lawn of the Presbyterian Church. Chrystal is the Commanding Officer of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the United States National Guard of New Jersey. The brigade’s nickname is “Jersey Blues” and its history dates back to the 17th century with the earliest units serving in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War.

The parade ends at the Veterans' Memorial adjacent to the New Providence Memorial Library, where remarks by Mayor Hern and American Legion Commander Clarizio will conclude the formal events of the day.

After the celebration, the American Legion will host an Open House at the Post Hall on Elkwood Avenue, and the public also is invited to the De Corso Community Center on 4th Street & Livingston Avenue for refreshments.

All community groups can sign up to march in the parade. Sign-up forms are available online at www.newprov.org/recreation, or call (908) 464-4430 or nprec@newprov.org.
