New Providence Mourns Matthew Kantor: An American Hero

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – On November 3, 2012, while many New Providence residents were without power and struggling to stay warm, the Department of Defense announced the death of an American hero – Matthew G. Kantor, 22, of Gillette, NJ.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Kantor, the son of Ken & MaryJane Kantor, owners of Kidding Around Childrenswear in New Providence, was killed Nov. 1, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and stability operations in Zabul, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Va.  

“We extend our condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this true warrior who has paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of freedom,” said Capt. Robert Smith, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Group TWO, in a press release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and shipmates during this very difficult time.”

Visitation will be held at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, Thursday, November 8 from 2- 4 pm and again from 7 until 9 pm.  A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday November 9, 2012 at Valley Memorial, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.  Arrangements are being handled through Valley Memorial Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Road, Gillette.
