NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence Lady Pioneers pulled off a seemingly routine victory over Roselle, 54-26, on Thursday afternoon.

The first few minutes of the first quarter started off slow, with each team testing each other’s waters. Before long, New Providence began their dominant run with the help of junior Kaycee de Voogd and freshman guard Sydney Morang. By the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers led 15-8.

While key players added to the point totals, New Providence’s strong defense took care of the rest, effectively blocking out any advances by Roselle. Morang continued her stellar performance throughout the quarter, closing out the first half with 21 points of her own.

The end of the first half marked a buzzer-beater from senior Nicole Sanczyk to take the Pioneers into the locker room with a 31-11 lead.

The rest of the game was completely dominated by New Providence, as they picked up an additional 23 points to Roselle’s 15, to close out the game with a 54-26 victory. While Roselle was able to carve paths past New Providence’s defense, their plays were marred by countless errors, which ultimately kept them from scoring.

“They just played really well, no doubt about it,” Roselle’s Johanna Jaramillo said. “Their defense was really cutting into our plays, so it’s just something we’ll have to work on in the future.”

Morang led New Providence with a game-high of 23 points, while Jaramillo led Roselle with 14 points. The win brings New Providence’s season record to 17-2, while Roselle drops to 3-15.

New Providence’s returns to floor on February 5 when they face David Brearley.
