NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Putting forth an intense and physical effort was on the minds of New Providence’s team on Tuesday night, when the Lady Pioneers came away with a 55-34 victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood in the first round of the Union County Tournament.
“Tonight, we wanted to come out and set the intensity level as well as our style of play,” New Providence head coach Cap Pazdera said. “We did that well on the offensive end by scoring 20 points. We played hard and seemed to get everybody’s best game.”
The victory for New Providence not only eliminated Scotch Plains-Fanwood from the county tournament, but also increased New Providence’s win streak to 11 consecutive games.
“We’re just taking this streak one game at a time.” Pazdera said. “We have goals we want to accomplish and this is one of them.”
Sophomore Sydney Morang and her teammates took a 28-17 lead over Scotch Plains-Fanwood going into the second half.
“They were an extremely physical team,” said Morang, “We matched their intensity from the start, and that gave us the win.”
In the second half, Scotch Plains-Fanwood had trouble keeping up with the pace of New Providence. Morang, Natalie Barrett, Sarah Zeto and Morgan Mohlmann were all key assets of the team’s pace in the second half.
New Providence’s next game will be against Plainfield on Thursday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in the New Providence High School gymnasium.
