NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Gold team took everything but the basketball court at the New Providence Education Foundation’s second annual March Mayhem fundraiser.

The Gold team won the game 40-36 against the Green team. They led by at least seven points almost the entire game until the fourth quarter when the Green team came within two points of tying the game.

“We like to think this is a really fun event, watching teacher’s play,” said Hugo Barth, the NPEF’s president.

The coaches of both teams and referees were students who cheered on their teachers and faculty as they ran up and down the court. Gary Ellison scored the first baskets for the Gold team and Steven Siracusa opened the game for the Green team.

The Gold team also managed to capture the winning title in the coaches’ knock out tournament after the third quarter. Other events in the evening included a kindergarten to second grade and fourth to sixth grade shooting contest after the first quarter and a knock out contest for middle school students after the third quarter.

At halftime, reigning champion and announcer Nick Iannacone said, “It’s half time, so that means it’s time for me to eat a lot of wings, really fast.”

Iannacone took the title and the other participants all received medals and Buffalo Wild Wings sauce boxes with gift cards stuffed in them. Participants of the other contests won prizes ranging from basketballs and t-shirts to a grand prize of New York Knicks tickets.

“It’s really to boost school spirit,” Barth said.

Spirit definitely filled the stands of the high school gymnasium. A bake sale was held during the game to collect money for Hurricane Sandy victims. The two teams shook hands after the buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter.

According the Barth, the NPEF has raised over $500,000 since its founding in 2004.
