OLD BRIDGE, NJ – New Providence junior attacker Jack Harvey scored the 100th goal of his career and the Pioneers held off a strong second-half comeback to defeat Old Bridge, 4-3, on opening day at Lombardi Field.

The Pioneers started their season on a hot start, scoring two early goals in the first quarter and led, 4-1, at the half. However, the Knights pulled the game within one in the third quarter and had a man-advantage in the final minute before being staved off by New Providence.

“We played tough,” Pioneer head coach Vinny Carangelo said. “It was not how we drew up finishing the game…You have to give credit to Old Bridge. They played good defense. Their goalie [Nick Marzullo] made some big saves. They took us out of our game and our kids got together and played as a unit.”

Jonathan Ebert, James Burke and Mike Palmieri each deposited a goal, to go along with Harvey’s career-setting mark to give New Providence a three-goal advantage at the game’s midway point

Harvey, who also contributed two assists in Wednesday’s game, is the second player on New Providence’s current roster with 100 career goals.

The Knights added two third quarter goals to pull within one tally, however Old Bridge found themselves shorthanded for most of fourth quarter.

A few ill-advised one-minute penalties plagued the Knights’ comeback attempt, however they still managed to keep their deficit at one.

After killing off all of their mistakes, Old Bridge found themselves with a man-advantage in the final minute of regulation, but the experienced Pioneer defense held off the Knights’ attack, leading to New Providence’s first victory of the season.

The Pioneers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Nutley.
