NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Senior girls Soccer team co-captain Casey Trezza has been named The Alternative Press of New Providence's Athlete of the Week for her overall performance to open the 2013 season.

"Casey is a 4-year varsity player and a captain for her senior year," head coach Scott Murphy said. "She is a great leader for our team on and off the field."

As a central midfielder, Casey really has to work with everyone on the team and hold them together when they are down.

Murphy recognizes her dedication to the entire team.

He said: "The culture of our team is reflective of her attitude and work ethic."

Her teammates are also very grateful to have a devoted captain like Casey.

"Casey is such an amazing leader on and off the field," junior goalie Katie Vigilante said. "She is selfless, and is always getting our spirits up when we're down.  Her soccer success is well deserved, and I'm excited to see where she'll end up next year.  I couldn't have asked for a better captain to look up to!"

Along with her consistent play, Casey has managed to put three goals in the back of the net and has had one assist on the year.

Casey is also very grateful for her team.

"Being on the Girls’ Soccer team has been the best experience in high school for me and I have loved every second of it," she said.

You can always hear Casey cheering her team up on the field, trying to motivate others.  This especially worked to her and her teammates’ benefit last week Thursday, when the Pioneers defeated Oak Knoll 3-2, where Casey scored one of the deciding goals.

The Pioneers' record now lies at 5-8 and Casey has set goals that she knows the whole team wants to meet. \

"Our goal for the season is to keep getting better every game so we can make a great run in the state tournament," she said.

Casey is a well-rounded athlete. To compliment her high school soccer career, this winter will be her third year on the school's Varsity Basketball team.  Last season, she netted 81 points for her team.

She hopes to continue her soccer career through college, but is not certain as to where she is going yet.  As for basketball, Casey would like to be involved in an intramural team.

Casey and the Pioneers will next vie for a victory when they battle Elizabeth on Thursday at Lieder Field.
