National Travel and Tourism Week in AC

What better way could there be to observe a week dedicated to travel and tourism, than to stroll the historic Atlantic City Boardwalk and sample fine wines at a leisurely pace? 

Tourism marketing officials at the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA) are marking the annual National Travel and Tourism Week (May 4-12) by providing free souvenir coasters boasting the "Do AC" the National Travel & Tourism Week logos at the wine tents on the Boardwalk during the AC Boardwalk Wine Promenade on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.  Signage at the tents will draw attention to the value of the travel and tourism industry to the economy. 

The ACCVA will also present the annual Atlantic City Host Awards on May 8 to highlight the importance of professionalism and quality customer service in the hospitality industry.  During the Host Awards, the Greater Atlantic City Concierge Association and the ACCVA Foundation will present several scholarships to students pursuing careers in tourism and hospitality.   National Travel and Tourism Week has been celebrated the first full week of May since 1984.  It was established by the U.S. Travel Association (USTA) to champion the power of travel.  According to research and statistics compiled by the USTA, travel to and within the United States generated $2 trillion in economic output in 2012.   

In New Jersey, travelers to the state spent $38 billion in 2012 and generated $4.5 billion in state and local taxes.  The tourism industry statewide directly supports 318,500 jobs.   In Atlantic City in 2012, approximately 27.2 million visitors used a record 5.2 million room nights and generated $35.5 million in luxury tax revenues.   "National Travel and Tourism Week presents a good opportunity to highlight how much the industry contributes to our communities.  So many of us derive our livelihoods either directly or indirectly from tourism, and this is our chance to both recognize those who work in the industry and salute the public that supports us by visiting," said Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA.

Beach Shack, Cape May’s laid-back beachside hotel opens its doors this summer to a special group of furry friends. For the first time, this retro-inspired property is allowing dogs to stay overnight with their owners as well as to dine at Beach Shack’s iconic surfer bar and lounge, the Rusty Nail.  The Rusty Nail has introduced a new Doggie Menu for the season, which includes delicious canine cuisine and adorable puppy treats, and to cap off the fido-filled summer, the property is holding a Rusty Nail Dog Mascot competition.

To commemorate these pet friendly offerings, Beach Shack has introduced the Paw’s Up Package which includes accommodations, a special welcome kit, a $20 Rusty Nail dining voucher and a Beach Shack dog leash.  When guests and their pets arrive upon check-in they will receive a welcome kit with a list of suggested pet friendly activities in the area, as well a pet door tag.  The welcome kit also includes a greeting card, The Blissful Dog nose balm, use of a CritterZone air purifier, all natural Wahl dry pet shampoo, use of a Beach Shack dog bed, branded food and water bowls, a Beach Shack Frisbee, branded disposable doggie bags as well as a special treat.  Rates for the Paw’s Up package start at $156/night which includes a $35/night fee for dogs.  The welcome kit amenities are available when booking the package, as well as to all guests with their pets in tow.

At the hotel’s well-known restaurant, The Rusty Nail, guests who bring their canine friends to the beach to enjoy some sun and surf can also offer them a tasty midday snack.  The famed restaurant’s new Doggie Menu will give all four-legged friends something to howl about: with various full meal and treat options, including Bowser Beer, Hot Diggity Dogs, and a Grilled Chicken Doggie Bowl.   The Rusty Nail Bar and Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8AM-10PM. Guests of The Rusty Nail can enjoy satisfying beach blanket comfort food indoors or outdoors as well as by the popular firepit.

For those searching for a little hometown glory over the summer season, visitors of the Beach Shack can enter The Official Rusty Nail Dog Mascot Competition.  Starting June 1 through July 31, guests can submit a photo of their dog on the Rusty Nail Facebook Page to enter for a chance to be selected as the face of the Rusty Nail Doggy Ale, and a $250 Beach Shack gift certificate.  Announced on August 1, 10 finalists will be selected by judges including celebrity dog stylist Jorge Bendersky, to walk in a doggy-pageant runway on August 25, with the winner taking home the crown.  All entries must be available to attend The Rusty Nail, Cape May, NJ Dog Pageant on August 25 if selected as one of the 10 finalists.

This May 4th and 5th, Revel honors Cinco de Mayo with a weekend-long fun celebration of Mexico's culture and traditions.  The resort-wide fiesta will commence on the casino level and will feature authentic Mexican music, contests, giveaways and more.

Revel’s Cinco de Mayo festivities will take place Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th from 12pm to 6pm and will be centered at the Flower intersection between Lugo, Mussel Bar and Distrito at The Row.  A live Mariachi Band will perform all weekend throughout the casino floor and The Row.   As authentic Latin Music is playing, guests can feel as if they are south of the border.

From 2pm to 4pm each day, Corona and Patron Models will be offering giveaways supplied by Distrito Cantina at The Row.  During all the fun each day, guests will have the opportunity to win $10,000 by tossing a lime into a beer mug.  Although the event is open to the public, participants must stop by the Revel Card Desk or Box office between 9am and 3:45PM to receive an entry. At 4pm in The Row, five winners’ names will be selected for one chance to toss a lime into a beer mug and win $10,000.  Runners up will receive special gifts.

Over 720 guests helped raise more than $440,000 at the 33rd Annual Stockton College Scholarship Benefit Gala held Saturday, April 27 at Revel. The Gala proceeds are part of the Stockton College Foundation’s fund-raising efforts aimed at reaching an additional $2 million goal for scholarships.

“Tonight, I am pleased to tell you that we have raised $950,000 towards our $2 million Let’s Do More! scholarship goal,” President Herman J. Saatkamp told the Gala guests.  “And the total comprehensive campaign has raised in excess of $22 million.”

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Benefit Gala itself has raised $5 million for scholarships in the past 10 years. All the proceeds from the Gala support scholarships.

The college’s first comprehensive fund-raising campaign reached its initial goal of $20 million, targeted in June 2014, in 2012. That inspired President Saatkamp to issue a challenge at last year’s Gala: “Let’s do more.” 

And so the Stockton charitable community did.

As of Saturday night, preliminary figures show a total of $22 million raised by the comprehensive campaign, with $8.4 million of that for scholarships. Funds raised in the comprehensive campaign also support academic programs, student programs and facilities. 

 

 

This summer the Philadelphia Museum of Art will present Art Splash—a season filled with art, imaginative installations, and creative play. Centered on a retrospective of the work of the renowned Caldecott Medal-winning children’s book illustrator Jerry Pinkney, Art Splash will present five enchanting exhibitions of illustration, fashion, photography, and design, each created especially with families in mind. Exciting interactive play spaces, daily hands-on art activities, and special events will combine for an extraordinary summer arts experience for children and their families. These exhibitions will open at various times throughout the spring and early summer. Daily Art Splash family programming begins on June 28.

 

ADMISSION Admission to Art Splash exhibitions and all programming is free for children under 12, $10 for adults.

Using their quick wit, Mochrie and Sherwood take contributions from the audience to create hilarious and original scenes. Throughout the evening, the show becomes truly interactive as audience members are called to the stage to participate in the fun.  Colin and Brad have been featured recently on “Trust Us With Your Life” on ABC, along with Drew Carey’s “Improv-a-Ganza” on the Game Show Network. Their hit DVD “Two Man Group: Live and Dangerous Comedy” was released in 2011.
