MONTVILLE, NJ – Thirty-eight juniors of the class of 2015 were inducted into the Montville Township High School [MTHS] Chapter of the National Honor Society on May 27.

Before an audience of family and peers, the inductees pledged to uphold the basic tenets of the ninety-three year old organization.

“I will be true to the principles for which it stands,” the scholars recited. “And I will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character.”

To become a member of the National Honor Society, candidates had to complete a rigorous application process. To meet the criteria of Scholarship, they each needed a 3.75, or better, grade point average. In addition, each applicant had to demonstrate Service, Leadership and Character.

“Only one of these is quantifiable,” noted Superintendent, Dr. Paul Fried, during the ceremony. “And that is your grade point average. But, from my perspective, it is the other three characteristics that matter most. From my perspective, it is your choices in service, leadership and character that truly define who you are, and who you will become.”

Principal Douglas Sanford echoed that sentiment, “We are here to celebrate the choices and, in some cases, the sacrifices, you have made so far on your journey through life.”

MTHS National Honor Society [NHS] advisors, Mary Gormley and Catherine Lomauro, presented certificates to inductees. After receiving a certificate, each inductee signed the official NHS book and lit a candle as a symbolic gesture which represents the organization’s core values.
