PATERSON, NJ - Paterson police on Saturday caught murder suspect Kamal "Rico" Edge after an armed footchase in the city, bringing to an end a nearly six-month manhunt for the suspect in a two-day shooting spree that left one city woman dead and several others injured in June.

According to Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez, n Saturday, detectives from the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, who work regularly with the Paterson Police Department, informed  Detective Sergeant Louis Esposito and Detective Richard Martinez that Edge, 21, was standing in front of 196 Governor St.

Detectives, along with Emergency Response Team Officers Claud Mineo and Justin Kimble and Patrol Officer Paul Tafuri, responded and then spotted Edge. Seeing the approaching officers, Edge attempted to elude the officers and ran.

"After a short foot pursuit Mr. Edge realized he was surrounded and responded by reaching into his waistband, grabbing a loaded handgun, cocking the hammer, and start to pull it out," Rodriguez said. "At this moment in time the officers they were authorized by law to use deadly force as they were confronted with a known murderer, refusing to comply with officers demands, in the act of cocking and retrieving a handgun."

Mineo grabbed the suspect and threw him to the ground, holding Edge until other officers could assist him in cuffing the suspect.

According to Rodriguez, the handgun was a .25 caliber reported stolen from North Carolina. Eleven glassines of heroin were found in Edge's possession after he was arrested.

Quenay Cox, 20, of Governor Street was shot and killed on June 22 in an incident in which three other victims were also wounded by gunfire.

Two gunmen approached the area of Park Avenue and East 22nd St. by foot at around 2:30 a.m. and began firing multiple rounds. Investigations revealed that Edge was walking on E. 22nd St. near Park Ave. when he started to shoot at multiple victims with a handgun, according to Rodriguez.

Several hours before that shooting, on Friday night, June 21, a man was shot in the hand near the intersection of Putnam and Mercer streets.

"Outstanding police apprehension," said Paterson Police Director Glenn Brown of Edge's arrest Saturday. "There is no doubt this young crossed the line. These officers exercised great restraint."

"These officers should be commended as they showed true valor and bravery in the service of the city of Paterson," Rodriguez added.
