WEST ORANGE, NJ - The football season opened at West Orange High School with a 20-9 win over Teaneck High School.
Senior Irving Payne began the West Orange Mountaineers season with a bang by returning the starting kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and both schools exchanged a series of downs. Payne scored again on a sweep, making the score 14-0.
Teaneck struck back with a touchdown, followed by a two point safety on a punt miscue for West Orange, with the halftime score standing at 14-9.
The third period was a stalemate for both teams, with neither team scoring, but in the fourth quarter, Brandon Cowley of West Orange, first year starter, struck paydirt with a touchdown pass to Senior Sterling Baker to make the score 20-9. Although the extra point was no good, the Mountaineers controlled the clock for the remainder of the game and Teaneck did not score, giving West Orange the 20-9 win.
West Orange takes the field again this coming Friday, September 14, against host West Essex, a perennial state playoff team.
