Mountain Lakes Football Defeats Caldwell, 26-6, in State Final

UNION, NJ – Mountain Lakes wide receiver Christian Cuccinello scored three touchdowns to lead Lakers in a 26-6 victory over James Caldwell High School in the North 2, Group 2 football final on Saturday at Kean University.
The triumph completes Mountain Lake’s perfect season.
“To be 12-0 is sweet,” Mountain Lakes head coach Darrell Fusco said. “Our guys stuck in there the entire season and our goal was to win every game. I couldn’t be any more proud of what we were able to accomplish this season.”
Cuccinello opened the scoring early in the second quarter when ran the ball in from 13-yards out. After a failed conversion try, the Lakers held the lead at 6-0 into halftime.
Later in the third quarter, Mountain Lakes running back Zach Lesko lengthened the lead with a 20-yard touchdown run, before Cuccinnello added a two-point conversion.
Leading 14-0, Cuccinnello put Caldwell out of reach with a pair of touchdown runs.
Within a span of two minutes, he scored his second and third touchdowns of the game on 3-yard and 91-yard rushes.
“It’s great,” Cuccinello said on scoring three touchdowns in the game. “All of the credit goes to the offensive line. They helped me out all the way through the season and if it wasn’t for them, I couldn’t have done what I did this year as well as what I did today.”
Facing a 26-point deficit, James Caldwell broke the shutout when wide receiver Jack Kinney scored on a 14-yard pass from quarterback Joseph Salter.
The Chiefs finish the season with a 10-2 record.
