WEST ORANGE, NJ - Once again, Mount Pleasant Elementary School hosted a fun Family Game Show Night where families competed in Game Show contests, silly games of Simon Says, Tug of War, Name That Tune, and more.

“It was a fantastic, fun, family event that brought out the competitive side in everyone,” said Oriana Palumbo, PTA President Elect.

The trivia games consisted of 1 minute-and 30-second sessions where players showed off their knowledge of math, geography and history. The teams with lower scores at the end of each round had the chance to catch up, via 30-second silly physical challenges, like tossing rings onto plungers, which were stuck to parents’ heads, and tossing balls into baby potties (also located on parent’s heads). Challenges also consisted of jumping rope, dancing, and hula hooping.

Host, Allen Strauss, Owner/Founder and CEO of Hollyrock Entertainment, made the night fun by interspersing Game Show sessions with 60-second scavenger hunts to earn tickets for prizes. Participants had to run up and bring him aspirin, eye glasses, hand sanitizer, hand crème, store credit cards, $100 bills, checkbook, library cards, wedding photos, tape, tissues, pain relievers, dental floss, baby photos, sunglasses, Band-Aids, toothbrushes, tums, chocolate, sports logs, fire department badges, medical cards and more.

The kids had to be on their toes and in their mom’s purses quickly to get the items as they were called out. Some children who played last year even came prepared this year with backpacks filled with items they anticipated being called.

“It was very competitive,” said mom Tracey Brosnan. “I like to see my kids have fun getting tickets for silly things.”

Strauss also called out for ‘dads who were bald,’ ‘dads who needed to lose weight’ and ‘moms who could carry three kids at once.’ Parents also had to do pushups and jumping jacks for tickets.

Strauss kept the crowd laughing as he inspected the parents and told some dads that they did in fact need to shed some pounds.

Palumbo rose to the challenge, “I carried up three kids—I had one on each arm and one on my back,” she said.

Like last year, the moms beat the dads in Tug of War, but unlike last year, the moms also beat the dads in Brain Challenges this year.

The children also got in on the fun with their own games of Tug of War.

Other prizes ranging in value from $5-$15 gift cards, which were donated by the PTA included: gift cards to Panera, Five Below, and Mark and Julie’s, as well as items donated by Principal Michael Schiavo including toy megaphones, Frisbees and jump ropes

“This was our first year attending and we had the best family night out—such a good time,” said mom Danielle Bolen.
