Mother, Son Wounded During Robbery at Grocery Store

PATERSON, NJ - A mother and her son working at grocery store on Broadway were wounded early Wednesday morning when they resisted an armed robbery, police said.
The shooting happened at Esperanza Pueblo Grocery between E. 18th Street and Madison Avenue shortly before 1 am, according to authorities.
The incident started when suspect armed with a handgun entered the store and announced a robbery, police said. "At that time, the male victim came to his mother’s aid, and a violent struggle between the suspect and the male victim ensued,'' said Sgt. Patrick Murray of the Cease-Fire Unit. "During the struggle inside the store, the female victim attempted to assist her son, and multiple shots were fired by the suspect at that time, striking both victims.''
Police described the suspect as a black man wearing a red, long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans. Both victims are Paterson residents.
The mother is in critical but stable condition with an abdominal wound, while her son is in stable condition with a leg wound, police said. Both victims are being treated at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
