Morris Habitat Restore Celebrates Its 6th Anniversary

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 • 9:50am

On May 4, the parking lot of Morris Habitat’s ReStore was quickly filling up. Some people were eating breakfast in their cars and then lining up before the doors opened to get the best selection and savings of the day. Within five minutes of opening, more than 70 people had passed through the doors; by the end of the day, better than 1,000 came to browse and shop; that is nearly six times the normal traffic for a Saturday. This event set a new sales record.

Six years ago, few knew anything about a “ReStore.” Now, many in the area know the Morris Habitat ReStore is a  resource for new or gently used furniture, building supplies, appliances and more.  All the merchandise is donated (with donors getting a tax receipt) and pickups of larger items can be scheduled ahead of time.  Since first opening its doors, the ReStore has helped raised enough funding to build eight Morris Habitat homes and has kept more than 3,000 tons of materials out of landfills.

Information was available from Coming Home Rescue and College Hunks Hauling, and there was a blood drive.  Girl Scout Troop No. 258 handed out trees to help the environment.

The success of the day, from planning, to logistics, food shopping, parking, sales help, loading cars, staffing booths and more, goes to the over 25 volunteers and the dedicated staff who worked tirelessly that day (and weeks before ) to ensure an enjoyable, smoothly run event!  Rick Ostberg, Restore director said “The ReStore loves big events and the anniversary celebration is the happiest of the big events. Thanks to those volunteers who helped out and the customers who flooded into the store to get good deals and help us build affordable housing.”

Ritchies’s Music, Taylor Rental and Costco donated food and other items.

ReStore is located at 274 South Salem St., Randolph, NJ 07869.  It is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash, debit cards, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Donation drop offs can be made during store hours, or for larger items call (973) 366-3358 to schedule a pickup. To learn more about the ReStore and upcoming sales go to www.morrisrestore.org.
