BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston striker Chris Moran netted a hat trick to lead the Highlanders in a 3-2 triumph over New Providence on Thursday.
"My teammates gave me several opportunities to be the guy who put the ball in the net and I am grateful," Moran said. "It's always special to beat New Prov!"
After a slow start to the game, the home team struck first with a goal by Moran off a deflection, giving the Highlanders an early advantage.
However, New Providence junior James Marriot responded a few minutes later. After what seemed to be a routine save by Gov. Livingston’s goalie Jake Topor, Marriot didn’t stop his run on goal and pried the ball loose from Topor’s grasp and buried it into the empty net, tying the score at one.
With New Providence having momentum going into the second half, they wasted no time to get back on the board. Sophomore Sean Regan scored off a pass from James Burke in the 43rd minute to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
“I anticipated what James (Burke) was going to do and that set me up for a good shot on goal,” said Regan.
The Highlanders answered back when Moran blasted the equalizer in the back of the net in the 55th minute, and eventually nailing the game winner in the 64th.
“I think we got a little complacent after we went up 2-1,” Pioneer coach Teddy Niedzielski said after the loss. “They were just more experienced than us and we weren’t ready for that.”
Topor had 10 in his win, while Pioneer goalie Sebastian Camacho recored eight stops.
"This was a good win for our team because we came from behind to win. It was a confidence builder," said Gov. Livingston Coach Bruno Somma.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday as the Highlanders face Plainfield, while New Providence will play opposite Johnson High School.
