MONTVILLE, NJ - With the Sixth Annual Relay For Life just days away, the 2014 Planning Committee is making final preparations. The event will take place on Saturday, June 7 from noon – midnight at MTHS track.
Relay For Life is an event that brings families, friends, businesses and neighbors together in recognition of the continuing fight to find a cure and conquer cancer. Town-wide fundraising efforts have yielded more than $45,000 to date with more on-site fundraisers planned to take place at Relay.
Participants may register online at www.relayforlife.org/montvillenj. Those interested in walking laps around the high school track to honor survivors and remember those lost to cancer can also register in-person on the day of the event.
According to Jennifer Romer, Specialist for the American Cancer Society, the opening ceremony begins at 1 p.m.
A full agenda of entertainment is planned, including music, team fundraising, activities, fun theme laps, a Dunk Tank and a bounce house. Live musical performances this year by Anthony Duke Clause, Montville’s School of Rock, We Stole the Weekend and the Sam Haiman Band are expected to get the crowd singing and dancing. Children may participate in jello eating contests, water balloon toss, Simon Says and a hula hoop contest. DJs at Large will return again this year to provide the soundtrack for Relay.
Survivors are guests of Relay and admission to the event is free. This year, survivors can stop at the new Hospitality Tent where they may meet with representatives from numerous well-care services including Montville Relay veteran John Longo, massage therapist. An acupuncturist, nutritionist and a yoga expert are also scheduled to offer information to survivors between 1 – 3 p.m. Snacks and beverages are provided as a courtesy to cancer survivors and their caregivers. For more information, contact Survivor Chair Mary Osborne-Marrero at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Many participants come to the event and participate in our Luminary ceremony, which allows us to silently reflect on the lives of those who we have lost to cancer,” Montville Relay For Life Chair Terry Becker said. “It also gives us time to think about those who have journeyed from diagnosis to treatment to wellness again. We are excited to have performers from the Fine Arts Connection, located in Montville, perform “Heal Us Now,” which will take the crowd that is anticipated to be over 500 people into the ceremony.”
The MTHS track will be illuminated by luminary bags which can be ‘In Memory of’ or ‘In honor of’ a loved one and can be purchased in advance or at the event before the ceremony. Luminaries may also be purchased online at www.relayforlife.org/montvillenj.
Funds raised during the Relay For Life go to help support the American Cancer Society’s mission to eliminate cancer by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
Becker is proud to announce that over the past five years, Montville Township Relay For Life has raised over $550,000 on behalf of the American Cancer Society.
