Moms, Get in the Picture

Sometimes a mother doesn’t see what her child sees. When a mom looks into the mirror, she might see a couple of new wrinkles, or maybe it’s those remaining couple of pounds she hasn’t been able to lose since her last pregnancy, or maybe the couple of new gray hairs, which are probably courtesy of her little ones.

But then she turns from the mirror and looks into the eyes of her child. Her child looks at her and sees the beautiful smile that lights up whenever they reach a new milestone or simply say something cute and sweet. Or maybe they see the eyes that sparkle in the night light when they are being rocked back to sleep. It’s the arms that not only give the best hugs ever, but they are the safest and most comfortable place on Earth. Mom’s hair even glows in the sunshine, just like Rapunzel’s, and her face is always full of love even when she is disciplining them. In their eyes, Mom is the most beautiful woman in the world.

These are the reasons why I love family portrait photography, and getting moms into the photos with their children. I want to show Moms how beautiful they really are, especially during the tender, sweet and playful moments with their children. But I also want to ensure that their children will have beautiful photographs for the future. These images are not just for moms, dads and grandparents to enjoy today. In 20, 30, and 40 years, our children will want to look back through old photographs and not just see how cute they were, but they want to see how cute their Mom and Dad were with them.

This year I’m working with the National Association of Professional Child Photographers to help spread the message and encourage moms to get into the photographs! NAPCP is already preparing a special Mother’s Day blog post that will showcase member photographers in photographs with their own children! We truly believe that these photographs are a priceless gift and even though we are typically the ones behind the camera, we still need to take the time, put the camera down and get into the photographs with our own families too.

And you don’t have to wait for a professional family portrait session to get in front of the camera and be in the photographs with your children. You can use any excuse to jump into the photos with them. Instead of taking the photo of your child blowing out their birthday candles, hand the camera to a friend and get behind your child and be in the photograph instead. (Mom Tip: Make this a rule and do it for all your friends. It’s the same scene at every birthday party – child behind the cake, Mom taking the photo and Dad taking the video. Take their cameras away and tell them to go be in the photographs). Whether it’s the family vacation, your child’s soccer game, Kindergarten graduation, or just hanging out in the backyard, be sure to jump into the photographs and give your child a big squeeze. We know you love them more than anything else in the world, and they love you just as much, and trust me - they’ll want to see your smiling face in their photos.

And if this post inspired you to update your family portraits, then please give me a call. There is still time for Dad to purchase a gift certificate for you for Mother’s Day and we can start planning your perfect session. And definitely don’t stress about how the family or children will behave that day, because I specialize in making chaos and craziness look absolutely sweet and adorable. All you’ll need to focus on is simply having fun with your kids!
