SUMMIT, NJ - Girls Track & Field Team member Gillian McIlroy, Boys Golf Team member Andrew Bowyer, and Boys Varsity Baseball Player Sean Guida have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending May 25.

Each week throughout the school year, girls and boys athletes will be honored for distinguishing themselves in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.

A three-year team captain, McIlroy is a previous Athlete of the Week, who has earned All Conference, All County, All Group 2, and All-State honors.

During the weekend of May 24-25, she captured three State Sectional titles, taking first place in the Individual 1600m and 3200m runs, and ran on the girls winning 4x800 meter relay.

"Gillian is a outstanding young person as well as an outstanding athlete.  Her work ethic and her determination to succeed are exemplary.  Gillian is one of the top distance runners in NJ and in Summit history," said Head Coach Adam Fern.

Bowyer, a junior who is completing his second year as Captain of the Golf Team. was selected First Team, All Conference and, at the Tournament of Champions, tied for first place, Group II, and third place overall.

“Andrew has been our number one player since his freshman year,” said Head Coach Dick Keating.

Guida, Co-Captain and three-year Varsity starter, helped lead the Hilltopper baseball team to a 3-0 week as they advanced to the Sectional Semi-Final Round for first time since 1998.

Versus South Plainfield in the NJSIAA First Round, Guida got the win on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out five in a 2-0 Summit victory.  Offensively, he went 3 for 4 with two doubles.

Against New Providence in a 5-4 Hilltopper triumph, Guida went  3 for 4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI.  And, against Mendham NJSIAA Quarterfinal, he went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in a 3-2 Summit win.

“Sean is the vocal leader of this team, pushing all of his teammates for all they have.  He is leading the team with an impressive .435 batting average.  It doesn't matter what the situation, Sean comes out shining.  Sean is a fun, yet intense baseball player to coach and I enjoy watching him play everyday,” said Head Coach Kevin Zaleski.
