Millburn Township Students Win 79 Scholastic Visual Art Awards

Thursday, February 14, 2013 • 4:46pm

MILLBURN, NJ - Millburn Township Public School students have won 79 Visual Art awards in the prestigious 2013 Northern NJ Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Students at Millburn High School won 24 Gold Key awards, 27 Silver Key awards and 26 Honorable Mention awards. Two students at the Millburn Middle School also won awards this year including a Gold Key and an Honorable Mention.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition is sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The competition is the nation’s longest-running, largest and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts and strives to identify, motivate and validate the next generation of artists and writers. The student work is judged first at the regional level and then at the national level. After work is submitted regionally, the affiliate organization coordinates the judging of work by local professionals in the visual and literary arts. Students have the chance to be selected for Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention Awards for individual works as well as for Senior Art Portfolios. The jury process is "blind", which means the jurors do not know any personal information about the students. The artwork is judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal vision.

Millburn art students submitted their artwork in December to the Montclair Art Museum, located at 3 South Mountain Avenue in Montclair, which serves as the local Scholastic Arts affiliate organization for this region. The museum’s Director of Education, Gary Garrido Schneider, informed winners that a jury of professional artists, curators, and arts educators spent 30+ hours reviewing 3400 works of art submitted by over 900 individual student artists from across Northern New Jersey. According to the Scholastic Art and Writing website, approximately 7 – 10% of all works submitted regionally are recognized with Gold Key Awards. 10 – 15% are recognized with Silver Key Awards and 15 – 20% receive Honorable Mention Awards. Winning students in Millburn represent all parts of the Millburn Township art curriculum and include works in categories such as printmaking, painting, drawing, digital arts, sculpture, crafts, photography, film, architecture and comic art.

An exhibit of the Gold Key artwork will be on display at Montclair Art Museum from Feb. 12 – March 10, 2013 in the Education and Art School Arcade gallery. The Award Ceremony and Reception for Gold Key and Silver Key winners will be on Tuesday, February 12th from 6 – 9 pm.  An event honoring all Millburn Township Scholastic winners will be held at the Millburn High School on March 21st.

Works that receive Gold Key recognition at the regional level are automatically included in the pool of work that is judged nationally among Gold Key winning work from across the country. The national awards will be announced in mid-March and winning students will receive their awards at a ceremony held at Carnegie Hall in New York City in May.
