MILLBURN NJ- The Millburn Millers Boys Soccer Team has had an impressive fall thus far, claiming the North 2, Group 4 sectional title in upset fashion.  Millburn now has its sights set on a second consecutive state title and will take the next step toward that goal on Tuesday night in Somerville, when it faces off against West Orange High School.

This post-season has been one to remember for the seventh-seeded Millburn Millers soccer team. They began their playoff run with a trip to the Essex-county tournament where they lost in the final round. Now with a sectional title under their wing, Millburn has one goal in mind, which is a state title.

“I am very impressed with the team’s spirit and their caliber of the game after they have overcame the ten, 3, 2, and now number one seeds in their respective tournaments," the  High School’s athletic Director, Dr. Ted D’Alessio said after Friday’s win.  "I am very glad that they have repeated as sectional champions once again.”

On Friday afternoon, Millburn defeated No. 1 Watchung Hills, 2-1. The victory was fueled by goals from junior Matt Stine and Vasil Matsur. After the game Matsur talked about the team’s perseverance so far in the season. He said, “We struggled a little in the beginning but we got everything sorted out as a team and are feeling very confident.”

One of the leaders of this year’s squad is senior Josh Mata. Mata is enthralled with the team’s play and hopes to continue the success in the latter part of the playoffs. Mata said, “Our upcoming games mean a lot for us. We are playing a team from the same district as us and it is going to be very hard because they know us and they know how we play. But we have a goal that we are going to achieve and we are going to achieve our goal by staying together and playing as a unit.”

Millburn’s end goal this year is to take the turf at The College of New Jersey on Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. to play for a Group 4 championship, but right now only the imminent future is on their minds.

Millburn has already defeated the 10th-seeded Edison High School, second-seeded Elizabeth High School and third-seeded Scotch Plains High School. The sectional champs hope to continue the trend against the 15th-seeded West Orange High School in the group 4 semi-final on Tuesday.
