MILLBURN, NJ - Reports are beginning to be circulated about the death of a Millburn High School student on Thursday morning.  While details have not been made public, the School District has issued the following announcement:

School personnel were informed early this morning that a Millburn High School student, Charles Zhang, Grade 12, has died.  The family has requested that information about the cause of death not be shared at this time.

Our thoughts and support go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Trained support personnel are in place and are available for all students and staff at the high school and at the district's other schools as well.  Additional grief counseling will be provided moving forward for all who need it.

The district is aware that there have been rumors that this was a suicide death.  Since the subject has been raised, we want to take this opportunity to remind our community that suicide, when it does occur, is a very complicated act.  Its causes are complex, and the warning signs can be confusing.  For additional information on this very important topic, please visit the website of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at http://www.afsp.org.

The district's Special Services Department will be hosting a meeting for parents and others in the community as soon as it can be scheduled, with mental health professionals, in order to provide information about coping with grief and sudden death and about ways adults can help students navigate the adolescent years.  More information on the day, time and location of that meeting will be forthcoming.
