MILLBURN, NJ - Coming off of first place victories in both counties and sectionals, the Millburn High School girls and boys cross country teams continued their successes at the Group Championships last Saturday, with the boys team advancing onto states and the girls placing sixth.
In varsity boys cross country, the team finished with 141 points, which landed them in fourth place, behind West Windsor Plainsboro South, Westfield, and Cherry Hill, whose top three finishes meant that they qualified automatically for the State Championships. Luckily, a fourth place finish was enough to grant Millburn the wild card spot, meaning that the team will compete next week at Holmdel.
Millburn’s top runner was senior Robert Stone, in second place with 15:58, which earned him a spot in states as an individual. He was surpassed only by Dylan Tarpey of Freehold Township, in 15:39.
Stone was followed by freshman Matt Grossman, in twelfth place with 16:26, and senior Steven Cohen, who placed 17th in 16:33. Millburn’s fourth and fifth place scorers were senior Christopher Shim and sophomore Will Meyer, whose times of 17:14 and 17:21 ended the team in fourth place.
The boys cross country runners also consisted of sophomores Owen McCarthy and Chris Stone.
On the girls’ contingent, Millburn placed sixth, with 191 points, missing qualifying for states but finishing their successful season on a high note.
Senior Corey Weiss placed fifth in 19:09. This qualified her as an individual. Senior Antanina Belzer finished in thirteenth in 19:28, but her time earned her a wild card spot, so she will be advancing with Weiss.
Freshmen Katie Delidow (33rd, 20:06), Nikki Cavender (59th, 20:31), and senior Maeve Flanagan (97th, 21:28) contributed to Millburn’s team score. Sophomore Caroline Shim and Junior Sally Morris also ran.
The Group Championships were held in Holmdel Park last Saturday the 16th, with 4 groups of public schools, based on region, and two non-public groups. Millburn was considered part of Group 4. The meet was a qualification to States, or the Meet of Championships. It will be held next Saturday, Nov. 23, also at Holmdel Park.
