MILLBURN, NJ – Dr. Lorraine Maita addressed the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting which was held at Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse.
The subject of the talk was how to make your body younger and healthier. "Many of my patients are busy professionals who tell me ‘I can't afford to get sick,’" Dr. Maita said.
Her patients between the ages of 40 and 60 are often concerned about memory and brain function. “As we age, men tend to get grumpy and women often get anxious,” Dr. Maita noted. To combat this, the brain needs the right nutrients. The fatty acids EPA and DHA help with inflammation and can be beneficial to the body and the brain. Wild-caught fish are the best source of these nutrients because they eat algae rather than grains, but supplements may also be taken.
Getting outside, exercising, and the use of some herbal supplements like L-theanine can help one’s attention and focus as well. A diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is essential, as is getting enough sleep. For patients with trouble sleeping, Dr. Maita says there are some supplements and calming herbs that can help.
Hormone replacement therapy can be a great help with mood, memory, and energy when used judiciously. Women need estrogen and men need testosterone. Newer studies show that all-natural hormones applied through skin (not orally) are safe and can offer many benefits. A patient would have his or her hormones measured after trying diet, exercise, anti-inflammatory supplements and sleep modification to see if treatment would be recommended.
Memory may be improved by stimulating the left and right sides of the brain by doing things one does not normally do. “Art, music, languages and travel are stimulating to your brain,” Dr. Maita said. Cortisone levels can be reduced with brain-shifting activities. To achieve optimum health, all these things contribute.
