Michelle Casalino, Candidate for West Orange Board of Education

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Michelle Lemma Casalino is seeking a third term on the West Orange Board of Education. Michelle is a lifelong resident of West Orange. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Tony, and have three children: Dana, a recent college graduate; Anthony, a college senior; and Joe, a sophomore at West Orange High School. Michelle currently works as a Regional Business Director for Madison Commercial Real Estate Services. All have been educated in the West Orange Public School system.
A long time community volunteer and organizer, Ms. Casalino has served on several boards as an an active member in such organizations as the Eagle Rock Civic Association, West Orange Rotary, West Orange PAL, Mountaineer Touchdown Club, Mountaineer Lacrosse Club, the Girl Scouts, and Redwood, Liberty, and WOHS PTAs. She helped to raised over 150K for the Redwood School playground and co-founded the Edison and Liberty Middle Schools After School Programs with the Community House.
In her past two terms on the West Orange School Board, Ms. Casalino has accomplished much for not only the students of the West Orange School district, but the taxpayer as well. Michelle initiated the push for Reregistration in the school district, which identifies, and continues to do so, students that are not legal residents of West Orange. This has saved the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs. Last year she was instrumental in lowering the BOE budget millions of dollars, so that not only was there not an increase in taxes, but a reduction. She was integral to other cost cutting efforts, such as reduction of custodial overtime, increased permit fees for school grounds usage, promotion of outside special education students to attend school in West Orange (with paid tuition), refinancing of bonds to reduce debt, restructuring of busing, working with West Orange Township to develop shared services, power and utilities cost reductions, teacher contract negotiations to reduce costs for tuition reimbursement, employee benefit thresholds, and prescription benefits, and more.
Michelle has worked tirelessly on behalf of West Orange students by establishing block scheduling at the Elementary and Middle School level; supported curriculum improvements in Math, language arts, social studies, and technology; is board liaison for the Small Learning Communities initiatves at West Orange High School, along with support for SAT prep, Freshman Seminar, the AVID program, and ASAP programs. These programs represent targeted attention to all West Orange Students, including athletes.
