MENDHAM, NJ - Mendham High School’s girls’ soccer team defeated Madison, 2-0, in the first round of the Morris County Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Minutemen capitalized on two key chances in the game which resulted in goals from Meghan Donovan and Tina Yerdon.

“We took advantage of our opportunities,” Mendham’s head coach Mark Lahey said. “Our freshman (Donovan) finished the opportunity she had and we got a little lucky on a deflection on the second goal. It easily could have gone the other way.”

The game’s first goal came just minutes before halftime when Donovan, playing in her first varsity game, controlled the ball in the box and launched a shot with her left foot to the far side of the net.

The game could have gone in a different direction when a cross from Madison’s Kelsey Dyer led to a shot off the cross bar from Ali Waxgeiser’s banged a shot off of the crossbar midway through the second half. The Dodgers could not capitalize on the play.

“We put in a lot of heart and hustle throughout the game,” Mendham senior Becky Gohsler said. “We try to not be intimidated by the rankings because we know that if we play the best that we can, then we can always come away with a win.”

Mendham extended their lead towards the end of the second half when Yerdon got inside the box and took a shot that was deflected into the net to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead. Yerdon attributed the victory to the in-game adjustments that were made and effective communication by Mendham.

Mendham will play in the next round of the Morris County Tournament on Oct. 13.
