WEST ORANGE, NJ - "From time to time in my duties as mayor, I have the opportunity to recognize our Emergency Personnel for heroic actions," began Mayor Robert Parisi as he recognized West Orange Police Officer Dobre Risteski and Captain Michael Auletta of the Manalapan Fire Department.

On Dec. 19, 2013, a serious car accident on Route 280 West caused traffic to come to a standstill. As drivers were stuck in traffic, one of the vehicles involved in the crash burst into flames, smoke billowing. West Orange Police Officer Dobre Risteski was at the scene when the vehicle, with the occupant inside, was engulfed in smoke and flames. Captain Michael Auletta of the MFD, who was stuck in traffic, exited his vehicle and ran to help Risteski. Both men pulled the driver from the burning car, saving his life.

On hand to recognize the efforts of the two men were Parisi, Chief Fred Kingston of the West Orange Fire Department, Chief James Abbott of the West Orange Police Department, Risteski and Auletta.

The mayor also shared information about the impending snow and reminded residents about the new Snow Removal Hotline. Anthony Puglisi, director of the Office of Public Information for Essex County, discussed how Essex County provided 100 tons of salt to West Orange from its reserves, and was preparing to give an additional 50 tons. Potholes were also being repaired earlier in the day on Pleasant Valley Way.
