"Time and Tide" documents the rebuilding of Cambodia in post-Khmer Rouge times. The Khmer Rouge was the ruling party in Cambodia from 1975-1979 that murdered nearly two-million Cambodians. Gutwein captures Cambodia through a series of digitally enlarged Polaroid positive prints.
"I want to weave the cultural fabric between Cambodia and Paterson while creating a nostalgia for a place the viewer has never been..." says Colleen."Though far away from Paterson, Cambodia is a part of our modern consciousness. Gutwein's work gives us a glimpse of the heart breaking suffering and destruction, of the Cambodia's culture and resources."
Christine Conforti, Executive Director, says "What do we share with Cambodia and what do we take away with us as our beacon to peace? Near or far, the people of earth dwell everywhere. We are one with them, connecting through art."
Gutwein's work will appear at Ivanhoe from Saturday, May 5 through Sunday, June 10.
