March is National Nutrition Month
LIVINGSTON, NJ - Winter holiday gatherings have passed and have left many of us with cherished memories—and perhaps a bit of unwanted weight gain! March is the perfect time for National Nutrition Month because it’s between winter and spring. That makes it a great time to begin “gearing up” for better health.
Our bodies crave healthy eating habits and regular exercise all year round. But many of us need a friendly reminder to get ourselves back on track after the long, grey winter. Be kind to your body and reacquaint yourself with healthy eating habits and fitness.
Healthful eating fuels physical activities at every stage of life.
Once you start making some smarter, healthier food choices, your body will begin to look and feel healthier. Fitness at any age comes from a lifestyle that includes good nutrition and regular physical activity. The sooner you start, the better your health will be overall.
Well-nourished and active children and teens grow, develop, and learn better. Good nutrition helps ensure a healthy pregnancy and successful breastfeeding. And healthy eating and active living help adults and seniors feel their best and work productively, in addition to lowering their risk for a variety of conditions.
It’s your choice.
Food and physical activity choices are personal. Every time you eat something, you have the opportunity to choose foods that will nourish your body, giving it the nutrients it needs. And part of being well-nourished is eating portions of food that reasonable, too; even nutritious food can cause us problems if we always “super-size” them. Real fitness is all about attaining your own optimal level of health and overall well-being. Fitness is your good health—at its very best!
Food can be a source of enjoyment. The tastes of different foods add pleasure to eating—that’s part of the “experience.” It’s not that hard to begin to include your favorites within a wider variety of more healthful foods and give yourself a more healthy overall eating style. The new national campaign for better nutrition is Choose My Plate showing appropriate portion sizes and how much of each the four food groups should be on your plate.
