MAPLEWOOD, NJ – At its meeting this week, the Township Committee issued a proclamation recognizing Jan. 11 of this year and every year as Human Trafficking Awareness Day, as is recognized statewide in New Jersey and nationally.

“This is the second year Maplewood has participated in this awareness-building day in an effort to end scourge of people being held in slavery conditions and forced to work in the sex trade, as well as in forced labor, with little hope of escape,” said resident Michelle Bobrow.

With the Super Bowl coming to New Jersey next month, an extra effort is being made to make people aware of the problem, as it is predicted that the event will draw not only football fans but also those who are looking to engage in illegal activities.

New Jersey is a prime location for sex trafficking, with its transportation access.  The New Jersey Coalition against Human Trafficking is working to inform the public about human trafficking and enlist help in offering support through notifying the appropriate authorities, such as through the Polaris hotline, 888-3737888, and the NJ hotline at 855.END.NJ.HT (855-363-6548).
