MAPLEWOOD, NJ - Mayor Victor DeLuca will be available to perform marriage ceremonies on Monday, Oct. 21 in Town Hall. The September 27 ruling by Judge Mary C. Jacobson gave same-sex partners in New Jersey have the right to marry, and Maplewood will begin this Monday.

The Township Clerk’s office will issue marriage licenses to same sex partners beginning on Friday, Oct. 18. Applicants are required to wait 72 hours after obtaining the license before the marriage ceremony may take place.

It is important to note, however, that the New Jersey Supreme Court has been asked by Governor Christie to stay Judge Jacobson’s ruling. If the Supreme Court issues a stay prior to Oct. 21, the Township of Maplewood will follow that ruling.

UPDATE:  Mayor DeLuca said that nine couples had applied for licenses and he planned to perform the first ceremony on Monday at noon.  A multi-couple ceremony is also planned to take place on the steps of Town Hall on Monday at 5 p.m.
