MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Maplewood Libraries held ribbon-cutting ceremonies at both locations to announce its official entry into the BCCLS consortium of 75 libraries in Essex, Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties.  By joining BCCLS, Maplewood library-card-holding residents will have access to more than 5,000,000 items and will have walk-in privileges at the other member libraries.

Patrons will also be able to place requests and have materials delivered to Maplewood within a matter of days.  BCCLS will also provide enhanced eBooks and eResources for Maplewood residents.

Library Director Sarah Lester began the process of trying to get Maplewood into BCCLS when she became Librarian here two years ago.

“I came from a library that enjoyed the benefits of BCCLS, and I really wanted to do something like that here,” Lester said.  “We investigated other consortiums, but this one is really incredible. It’s very well run and I felt is was the best match.

”“I want to thank Sarah for her leadership,” said Mayor Victor DeLuca. “The board is behind her all the way to make our library even better than it is today.”  He said that people will be excited to see all of the new resources available to them. “Talk about shared services…We could never afford to have this kind of collection on our own. Now we are able to share with other communities and expand our services in a cost efficient way. So we’re enhancing services and saving money.”

“What you are doing here today is absolutely wonderful,” Assemblywoman Mila Jasey said.  “You are a model community when it comes to providing services for your citizens.”

The range of resources available now, both in print and digital, is vast.  Maplewood library patrons now have access to all the resources of the 75 BCCLS libraries and the Essex County libraries that are in the REBEL consortium.

Any person who lives, works, pays taxes or goes to school in Maplewood is entitled to a free Maplewood library card.
