Maplewood Citizens’ Eco-Forum

Residents Invited to Provide Input on Environmental Initiatives

 

WHAT:                    Facilitated forum for Maplewood residents to learn about current sustainability initiatives and to provide input and prioritize the green projects that will improve Maplewood's future.

 

WHEN:                    7:00 – 9:00 pm, Wednesday, January 30, 2013

 

WHERE:                  Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker Street, Maplewood, NJ

 

PROGRAM:          The facilitated forum will present and get public input on topics that will include (but not be limited to):

  • Natural resource preservation and stewardship
  • Infrastructure (trees, storm water management, climate change adaptation, urban design)
  • Waste management and recycling
  • Bicycle and pedestrian plans and the Maplewood Greenway Plan
  • Local green economy and commercial development; green business recognition
  • Energy efficiency and Maplewood’s carbon footprint
  • Sustainability for education programs, school based energy education and gardens
  • Green living, community gardens and composting

 

WHY:                       The Township of Maplewood and the volunteer based Maplewood Green Team will use the input gathered at this forum and the ideas generated at the 2012 Green Day Event to prioritize and guide the work of the committee in 2013.  “We look forward to this event and want to hear what our community is passionate about.  We want to know what sustainability and green efforts the community thinks will contribute to improved quality of life in Maplewood,” said Maplewood Deputy Mayor Kathleen Leventhal.

 

WHO:                       The event is hosted by the Township of Maplewood and the Maplewood Green Team.  The Maplewood Green Team has about 50 committed members, and is growing! Its mission is to promote sustainability throughout the town, by implementing plans and programs that support the mission, and to assure that municipal staff keeps the mission in mind when doing the work of the town.

 

Maplewood Township is a recognized environmental leader in New Jersey.  Maplewood is a model town in the state-wide Sustainable Jersey program and has been certified since 2009.  Recent awards include the 2007 Climate Champion of the Year award from Clean Air-Cool Planet and the 2008 Environmental Quality award from the EPA.
